REAL WEDDING // Lucy & Ben - An extra special Cypriot celebration

dommoore_2017_wedding_savage-0187.jpg

Today's real wedding post is an extra special post for us as it features none other than Dearly Beloved's Ben's twin sister Lucy and her new husband... also called Ben (yes, family events are confusing). Lucy and Ben tied the knot earlier this year in a beautiful, relaxed ceremony on the Cypriot coast. Wedding day photography by Dom Moore Photography.

For their greetings card style wedding invitation they chose tandem bicycle illustration as a nod to one of their favourite past times (Ben is a triathlete) and asked us to combine this with the iconic Cypriot olive branch.

dommoore_2017_wedding_savage-0023.jpg

The wedding took place at one of the couple's favourite places on earth, a small sailing club near where the family used to live, with the ceremony outside an idyllic church by the sea.

Lucy and Ben planned small, intimate celebration with lots of special DIY touches; the ceremony was conducted by the groom's grandfather, flowers were sourced from a local florist, meters (and meters) and lace bunting was hand made from vintage lace curtains by the bride's mother and sister, we took care of the stationery (of course) and the whole wedding party was on hand to help with decorating the space.

As well as holding nearly a decade of memories for the Aslett family the sailing club was full of rustic charm, it was lovely to be there to add last minute touches like decorating the chalkboard with a welcome message for guests.

Ed & Zoe - A real Cornish Country Farm Wedding

Ed & Zoe got in touch with us after spotting our designs on Instagram; the couple were planning a traditional church ceremony followed by fun marquee celebration on their parents farm and asked us to create stationery to suit the laid back style of their big day. Read on to see how their beautiful Cornish country farm wedding came together... Wedding day photography by the talented Christian Michael Photography.

Here's what Zoe had to say about working with us... "Having Dearly Beloved create our wedding stationery is something I'm truly thankful for. From the initial meeting with Abi our vision was perfectly captured and it was so exciting when our beautiful invites finally arrived. So many of our guests contacted us once they'd received their invites to say how fabulous they were and that they'd not seen anything like them before (yay). It gave people a little taster of our wedding style and what was to come. The stationery for the wedding day itself was just incredible. Again, we received so much positive feedback from guests with how quirky it looked."

Based in Bath Jessica Charleston designs beautiful, bespoke wedding gowns; we love the modern shapes featured in her designs and we know you will too. As the dresses she creates are truly couture she actually handcrafts each dress not once but twice; once as a toile prototype and then, only when she has perfected the pattern to fit your body perfectly does she create your wedding dress in the fabrics of your choice.

"I believe a wedding dress should be unique to you, your style and your wedding. From my shop in Bath I make couture wedding dresses tailored to fit perfectly and designed with you to be your perfect wedding dress."

Recently we worked with Jessica to create an illustration inspired by the recent Paper, Scissors, Stone collection. This bespoke project was a wonderful challenge; initially we created a whimsical image in the style of our custom portraits. However, interpreting the vision of our client is something we do best and after speaking to Jessica it was clear a softer more feminine painting was better suited to her brand.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO FOR BESPOKE WEDDING STATIONERY?
We wanted save-the-dates, invitations and wedding stationery to be very unique - as a gay couple, the idea of marriage has been a relatively new possibility (the US Supreme Court decision just this year!) for us.  To that extent, we didn't want to follow the traditional route.  Bespoke design allowed us to really put our unique ideas forward in a beautiful and modern way, setting the stage for a wonderful wedding for our family and closest friends.

WHAT WAS THE BEST THING ABOUT WORKING WITH DEARLY BELOVED?
Wow, where to start?  We had the most wonderful experience with Dearly Beloved -- Abi and Ben were extremely responsive and easy to work with.  Though we had a rough idea of what we wanted, we had no design/art experience to articulate our ideas. We sent a pinterest board and bunch of clip-art ideas to Abi who transformed our initial designs into a beautiful wedding suite.

Best of all, Abi was SUPER enthusiastic about the project, injecting a vibrant pulse into the project.   Turn-around time for design ideas was super quick and thoughtful -- we often received design alterations within a few hours. Though the project required a lot more work and money than simply picking out a suite of invitations/paper from a website or pre-designed template, the final product was absolutely 100% worth the effort. The bespoke invitations are an amazing way to set the tone for your wedding!

For the formal invitations Manjil and Brad requested a large screenprinted poster; this was so exciting to work on for us, we approached the design as if it was a gig / film poster and hopefully their loved ones will have them pinned up for years to come - a great example of breaking the norm!

MANJIL AND BRAD'S THREE TOP TIPS FOR COUPLES PLANNING A WEDDING
1.  Absolutely remember that you are marrying the person you truly love and the process is meant to be LOVING and FUN --- don't get bogged down in details and try to ENJOY this process.. a wedding is one of the most important events of your life! When there are disagreements, open your mind to alternatives and embrace the union of ideas (easier said than done!).  That said, giving each other unlimited veto power was also very useful!
2.  Start early and involve friends/family in the process.. make a spreadsheet with deadlines and expectations and stick to it!  Estimate a budget for each component of the wedding, and try to stick to it!
3. Closer to the date, planning fatigue is real -- take a break, and don't make hasty decisions.  All in all, remember that the wedding should reflect the couples unique life experiences .. the devil is in the details!

Two invites, two destination celebrations!

It has been an absolute pleasure to work on this, our latest bespoke project for wonderful couple Stephanie and Jonathon. They asked us to create two invitation designs for their wedding celebrations; a ceremony in Tuscany and a cocktail party in Melbourne (I know! Wow!)

Stephanie and Jonathon both had slightly different tastes in terms of the styles of illustration they liked and so we worked with them to create something they would both love. We decided to go for florals that were full and busy, block geometric shapes, vibrant colours and hand painted detail.

Stephanie and Jonathon_header portrait_v0.23.jpg

We also created this portrait of the awesome couple for their wedding website!

Here's what they had to say about working with us...

"Abi and Ben were FANTASTIC to work with- they completely understood our brief, and bought lots of great ideas to the table and made our ideas even better. They created 2 sets of invitations for us, plus a little portrait to go on the website we were making. I cant recommend them highly enough!"

A Summer Camp Wedding

Here at Dearly Beloved HQ Ben has been working on a collection for a Summer Camp themed wedding. A perfect style combination for any couple who want to celebrate a love of the great outdoors with a retro twist. We had so much fun getting inspiration for these designs, our influences range from Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom to Boy Scout style patches; check out our moodboard for an insight into the stuff we love looking at in the studio.

The brief was to design stationery that was feminine, edgy and romantic with a hand drawn look; we created a collection that embraced all of the floral elements of the theme and added a vintage, Victoriana feel to match the historic venue, Dewsall Court.

Abigail and Ben at Yosemite National Park, June 2015

We are back from our American adventure! We had such a wonderful time exploring the country and spending a month away together. One of our favourite places was Yosemite National Park, a fellow traveller snapped this picture of us in a moment that has become one of my favourite memories.

Now that we are back in good ole Blighty we are back in the Dearly Beloved studio and taking on new commissions! We will also be developing some new illustrations and lettering based on all the wonderful things we saw in USA. If you were following us on Instagram you got a preview into all the exciting things we saw; from hand painted vintage signs to the beautiful colours in the American landscape we ended our trip feeling inspired and ready to kick life's butt!

Signed, sealed, delivered...

Just packaged up our latest commission for another awesome couple. Love the nervous excitement of sending off our work, this time we have designed place settings, invitations and menus. The couple loved the invitation design so much they have even had it printed up as poster size artwork for their home together.

Mike & Ellen, A picture made for two

This has been our favourite commission to date!

London couple Mike and Ellen are planning a beautiful wedding in Cornwall inspired by the English countryside. After speaking to the couple it was clear they wanted an invitation that gave their guests a preview into their celebration and what better way to get guests imagining the day than representing the couple in a portrait. Their invitation also features the colour of Ellen's favourite flower, the Cornflower.

We are really looking forward to sharing more of the designs we have created, menus, signage, place settings... But you'll have to wait until after their big day to see those!

You and Me... Process painting
